Dynamics 365 Business Central Updates: April 2020

By Steve Endow

There are quite a few things going on with Business Central, so I thought I would share some things I've reading and working on lately.

1. Business Central 2020 Wave 1 deployment:  Business Central version 16.0 is being deployed to production tenants through June 15, 2020.  If you haven't yet scheduled your upgrade, visit your BC Admin Center and schedule a preferred date date.

2. What's New in Business Central:  Read about the new features in 2020 Wave 1 as well as features planned for release later in 2020.

3.  Dynamics 365 Business Central Field Guide book updated:  Erik Hougaard has updated his Business Central Field Guide book with features from 2020 Wave 1.  If you purchased the electronic copy of the book, you should have received an email regarding the update.

4. Webinar: What's New in 2020 Wave 1:  Areopa hosted a webinar with Luc van Vugt, Waldo (Eric Wauters), and AJ Kauffman, discussing the new technical and developer features in Business Central 2020 Wave 1.  The recording is now available on YouTube.

5. Enabling 2 Factor Authentication with Business Central:  Roberto Stefanetti wrote a blog post showing how to enable 2FA with Business Central.  If you're looking to increase the security of your Business Central tenant, give it a try.

6. AppInsights for Business Central:  Kennie Pontoppidan at Microsoft has shared that AppInsights is now available for Business Central.  If you're interested in looking at some telemetry for your Business Central tenant, or adding new telemetry, check out the documentation Kennie has shared.

Documentation:   aka.ms/bctelemetry

Samples:   aka.ms/bctelemetrysamples

7.  Business Central Admin Center Updates:  Olister Rumao has a nice blog post showing some of the improvements to the Business Central Admin Center that were added in version 15.4.  Additional fields and administrative tools are now available.

8.  Microsoft Learn Business Central Courses:  If you're looking to learn about Business Central, Microsoft Learn now has 23 modules for self-paced online learning.  If you're a new Business Central developer, 7 of those modules focus on development.

9. Business Central Development Training:  I've been using these two resources to learn Business Central AL development.  If you're looking for a quick way to get started on your own, you can start with the Workbook, and if you're looking for instructor led training, look for AJ's next AL Development class.

10. Docker Image Cleanup:  If you're using Docker for your Business Central sandboxes, you may have noticed some images that have a tag value of "<none".  These are likely orphaned images that can be removed.

Orphaned Images

Tobias Fenster provided me with a simple Docker command to clean up those images.

docker images -q -f dangling=true | % { docker rmi $_ }
